Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 22, 2025

ShotSensei is a tool for Nikon photographers. We keep it simple: no accounts, no tracking, no ads. This page explains exactly what data moves where when you use the app.

Photos you upload

When you upload a photo, it is processed entirely in your browser first. The image is resized and compressed locally before anything leaves your device.

For Diagnose mode and the optional scene photo in Plan mode, the compressed image is sent to Anthropic's Claude API for AI analysis. Anthropic receives the image to generate a recommendation and does not retain it beyond the duration of the API request, in accordance with Anthropic's privacy policy.

ShotSensei never stores your photos on any server. Once the API response comes back, the image is discarded.

EXIF data

When you upload a photo, ShotSensei reads a small set of camera settings from the file's EXIF metadata: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, and camera model. These are used to pre-fill the gear fields and compute the gap between your actual settings and the AI's recommendation.

GPS coordinates and location data are never read, extracted, or transmitted. All EXIF parsing happens in your browser; only the camera-settings fields listed above are ever used.

Local storage (your browser)

ShotSensei saves the following data in your browser's localStorage so your preferences persist between visits:

  • Gear preferences — your last-used body, lens, focal length, and teleconverter setting.
  • Session history— the AI's recommendations from your past sessions (subject, conditions, suggested settings). Up to 50 sessions are kept.
  • Named kits— gear setups you've saved by name. Up to 5 kits are stored.

None of this data is ever sent to our servers. It lives only in your browser. You can clear it at any time through your browser's settings, or by using the clear-history option inside the app.

Rate limiting

To prevent abuse, API requests are rate-limited using Upstash Redis. This involves storing a short-lived request count keyed to your IP address or an anonymous session token. No personal profile is built; the counter expires automatically. Upstash's data processing is covered by their privacy policy.

Hosting

ShotSensei is hosted on Vercel. Vercel's infrastructure handles all HTTP requests and may log standard web server data (IP address, request path, timestamp) for operational purposes. This is governed by Vercel's privacy policy.

No tracking, ads, or analytics

ShotSensei does not use cookies, advertising pixels, social media trackers, or any third-party analytics. There are no user accounts and we do not collect your name, email address, or any other personal information.

Children

ShotSensei is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
